In reply Sri Lanka approached nicely in the begaining but after fall of Jayasuriya they just cannot break the increasing run rate. In the end they fall short of 53 runs.

Australia Innings

As usual Hayden and Gilchrist started Australian innings. Hayden was looking quite today as Gilchrist on the other hand playing own style crushing the Sri Lankan attack. They reached to the toatal of 50 in 11th over without loosing any wicket. Fernando drop Gilchrist on his own bowling when he was on 31 though it was very difficult but these are the only chances you get while playing against team like Australia. Runs are coming easily for Australia when Murli brought into the attack in 12th over. Meanwhile Gilchrist completed his 50 in just 43 balls and continue to dominate bowling on the other hand Hayden was providing nice support to him. Their run rate moved above 6 when Gilchrist hit 2 towering sixers to Dilshan in 15th over. Murli on the other hand not allowing much room to them initially. Fernando brought back to the attack and immediately welcome by Gilchrist sixer and that brought their opening partnership to cross 100 in 17th over.

Nothing was working for Sri Lanka, at Half way Australia were on 135 will all 10 wickets intact. By the time Gilchrist completed his 15th ODI hundred in just 72 balls with 8 4s and 6 6s. Once again he was dropped by Sangakkara this time too was difficult one. Partnerships crossed 150 in just 128 balls and after this some relief for Sri Lanka as Hayden caught by Jayawardene when he was trying to loft Malinga when they were on 172. Immediately after this once again Gilchrist dropped by C Silva on 132 by the time Australia cross 200 in 27.3 overs. Finally a great great innings comes to an end when Gilchrist was just 1 short of his 150, got caught when he was trying to pull the ball and it takes an edge of the bat. After fall of Gilchrist run rate dropped a bit as Ponting was not looking on his own touch and finding difficult himselft playing shots. They past above 250 when Ponting hits his first six to Malinga in 34.4 overs. But they failed to take an advantage the openers given to them and only scores 59 in last 8 overs after Gilchrist out. In the end they manage to set the big target for Sri Lanka with the help of one of the best world cup innings from Gilchrist.

They moved pass compare to Australia score in 14th over when Sangakkara hit consecutive 6,4,4 to McGrath. The needed partnership was building as Sangakkara and Jayasuriya contine hammering Australia Bowling attack and took just 27 balls to complete second fifty of their innings, 100 in 15.3 overs. Spins came to the attack now by the time Jayasuriya completes his fifty and their partneship of 100. They need 171 more runs to win in 20 overs with 9 wickets left. Sangakkara completed his 40th fifty in 50 balls, but immediately caught when he was trying to pull Hogg at mid wicket when he was 54.

Clark brought to attack and he done a trick bowled Jayasuriya when he was trying to down the trak, the ball kept low and hit on off stump. Big wicket for Australia and the match was turning bit towards their way. It has started raining when 13.1 overs left and by the time their innings reduced to 36 overs and they need 120 more to win in 11.1 overs. Jayawardene fall lbw to Watson very next over after rain stopped. Everything now was in hands of C Silva and Dilshan and they continue to fighting but the required rate was moving up and up reached to 12 an over and they needed 84 in 42 balls. Wickets was not a problem but it was very difficult to break Australian tight bowling attack. Wickets were falling now as they were trying to do something extraordinary. After Taylor, Fulton and Styris was looking nice and started partnership between them. But very poor shot from Styris cost big wicket for New Zealand. World Cup 2007 semifinalists and their history

Although South Africa defeat against New Zealand provided an opportunity for England to come back in the tournament, an excellent come back from South Africa throw England out of the tournament. Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka did clear their path to semi final very early in the super eight stage. So we have now Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and South Africa will contest in Semi Final.

First Semi Final New Zealand v Sri Lanka

The first semi final of this tournament will be played between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. This match will be played on Tuesday, 24th April at Sabina Park, Jamaica. New Zealand has never won in world cup semi final moreover they lost against Sri Lanka in their super eight series match.

Second Semi Final Australia v South Africa

The second Semi Final will be contested between Australia and South Africa on Wednesday 25 April at Beausejour Stadium, St Lucia. Australia is the only unbeaten team so far in this tournament. Also they never loose in their previous semi final games.

Here is brief history of each of semi finalists in previous eight cricket world cup tournaments.

Australia History

This is the 6th time Australia will play in the semifinal and they have never loose in their previous games. In 1975 they beat England, in 1987 beat Pakistan, 1996 beat West Indies, 1999 beat South Africa and in 2003 they beat Sri Lanka.

New Zealand Semi final History

New Zealand is entering for the 5th time. They never win in their previous games. They lost against West Indies in 1975, against England in 1979 and against Pakistan in 1992 and 1999.

Sri Lanka Semi Fianl History

Sri Lanka managed to enter in the semifinal 2 times before. This is the 3rd time they will play in the cricket world cup semi final. Before they won against India in 1996 and lost to Australia in 2003.

South Africa

South Africa are the most unlucky team in the history of world cup semi finals. First time they played against England in 1992 needed 22 off 13 balls when it was rained stopped the play. By the time they needed 21 off one ball. Second time again Australia in 1999 needing nine to win off the final over, Klusener crashed Damien Fleming's first two balls for four. Klusener wanted a short single but this made Allan Donald caught in the middle of the pitch run out and the match was tied. With the advantage gained during the super six stage Australia reached the final.

An early exits of India and Pakistan and very long schedule made this tournament boring so far let us hope for more entertained cricket in the semis and in the final.

Fight For Semi Final Cricket World Cup 2007

South Africa defeat against New Zealand creates hope for England, West Indies and Bangladesh to enter into the Semi Final of Cricket World Cup 2007. Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka have already entered in to the Semi Finals and the positions of other teams are as following. South Africa now have 6 points with 1 match left against England. England having 4 points and 2 matches left where as West Indies and Bangladesh having 2 points each with 2 matches left. Everything depends on the match between South Africa and England on 17th April. This current position lead to the following possible Scenario.

If South Africa win against England.

In this case South Africa will easily enter into Semi Final stage with having 8 points. This will end the battle for Semi Final and the remaining matches will be of less interest. Then Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and South Africa will enter to the Semi Final stage.

If South Africa loose against England.

In this scenario the road to the semi final would be an easy for England. England will be equal to the South Africa with 6 points each but on the Run Rate side England is above South Africa. And this will lead to the following possibilities.

  • If England win the next match against West Indies then they will make for the Semi Final.
  • If England loose against West Indies there will be 3 teams with equal points West Indies or Bangladesh, South Africa and England. In this case looking at the current Net Run Rate England will have advantage over other two teams. So for West Indies the situations are more tight as they have to win with high margin so as to boost their NRR. Similarly there is chance for Bangladesh too, but they need to do some extraordinary to with both the matches again Ireland and West Indies with high margins.

This is cricket anythings can happen till the last ball bowled. So lets wait and watch the battle for semi final and the match between South Africa and England on 17th April.
